Khaaf is one of the cities of khorasan Razavi Province and its center is Khaaf town which is located in the southwest 250 kilometers far from Mashhad. Sangan, Nashtifan, Ghasemabad and Salami are other towns of Khaaf. Khaaf had been regarded as one of five districts of Torbat-jam until 1368 after that, this city became a separate city in the country divisions. This city with four districts which consist of Central (Markazi), Sangan, Jolge- Zuzan and Salami has the population about more than 110 thousand persons in the eastern border of Iran and it has about 123 kilometers common border with Afghanistan. This city is restricted to Roshtkhar from north, to Gonabad from west, to Gaenat from south and to Taybad and Afghanistan from east. The history of Khaaf mingles with that of Torbat-heydarieh and historical monuments exist from the 7th century AH. Khaaf was known as "Ruy" or "Rud"(Means River) in the past, perhaps because many rivers are flowing around the city. Khaaf is the other name of ((Beh Afarid)), the son of Farvardin month which is said he rose to innovate Zoroaster religion and founded a city which the name of this city is come from his name.
